Windows 2003 AdminPack.msi on Vista RTM

Installing the AdminPack.msi Adminpak.msi installs without error on Vista RTM computers but two DLL's, ADprop.dll and DSadmin.dll fail to register. Use regsvr32 to manually register those DLL's, otherwise Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC / DSA.MSC) fails to load correctly with "MMC could not create the snap-in"

Steps to repro 1. Install 2003 SP1 adminpak.msi - there will be no errors or warnings

    2. Under Administrative Tools, attempt to load Active Directory Users and Computers, Active Directory Domains and Trusts, etc.

    3. You will receive: "MMC could not create the snap-in."

     4. Close any of the snap-ins you tried to use.

    5. Copy all text between [start copy here] and [end copy here] and save as FIXADMINPACK.CMD

    6. Run the script with elevated credentials to register all ADMINPACK DLLs. No restart required.

    6. Restart the previously failing ADMINPACK snap-ins and they should behave normally.

Re: Windows 2003 AdminPack.msi on Vista RTM

    I have a question.

When running Active Directory users and computers how do you change the rights for the user.  In xp it was hold shift and right click and click on run as.  However on Vista that dosnt work, run as is present however it dosnt pull up the box and ask for other rights.

    Any ideas?

What I typically do is start MMC.exe itself this file is manifested to prompt you for credentials.

Re: Windows 2003 AdminPack.msi on Vista RTM

yeah its still not asking for diff cridentials, it just opens, and my account dosnt have access to make changes to ad users.  However my admin account does and its not asking me when I run mmc.exe or when I select run as.  I have also tried creating a shortcut for runas.

     Any other ideas?

So does a runas to a command prompt, Then from the resulting command prompt you should be able to launch the msc.  Does that not work?

well i can get the msc to pull up.  tried /noprofile and /user both dont work, for some reason its not asking me for admin credentials.  when I right click on it it does give me the option for run as but it just opens.

    Did you turn off UAC?

you can change the behavior of the runas to a prompt with the following

If you want to chance the behavior of
this you can do so in the Local policy by using GPedit.msc and browsing to
the Windows Settings | Local Policies | Security Options.  At the bottom
will be a set of policies with "User account control" at the begining of
    them.

Re: Windows 2003 AdminPack.msi on Vista RTM

Woot that worked.  It was the right combination of user account controls, but its working.  Woot now I get to show off around the office.

    virtualize- disabled

Switch to the secure desktop - enabled

Run all Administrators in admin approval- enabled

    Only elevate UIAccess apps- enabled

Only elevate executables that are signed- enabled

    Detect application Installations- disabled

Behavior of the elevation for standard- prompt

Behavior of the elevation for administrators- prompt

Admin Approval mode for the built-in Disabled.

Thanks for all your help.  If some one runs into this problem I hope this helps.

    Jason.

Re: Windows 2003 AdminPack.msi on Vista RTM

    Thx for this Josh,

I've waited from RC1 for this problem to be fixed. I've started testing Vista for my company and first and major thing that I need didn't work as it should. Now that Vista has finally been released I googled for this and came to the right place.

Also, I'm running a tech site with news and support forums so be sure to have me here active since this kind of information is vital for my bussines Wink

    Regards,

    Nikica
