I enjoyed your post. You made a lot of good points.

In regards to waiting for the first Service Pack...wow. In one breath you make good points about making changes in production, and then you spout out something like this.

There is no “MAYBE” to it, especially back in the Windows NT days…sounds like you haven't been doing this for very long. I’m mean gosh…if someone insults my manhood then I’ll be foolish and install the newest, shiniest thing.

We had a lot of problems with 2008 clustering because of this mentality. Guess what happened after SP1? Yeah...different world. Tons more stable. There is nothing wrong with being patient and strategic in your OS lifecycle.

Hey Matt, nice series of articles giving some spotlight to R2! While the economic situation put the breaks on a lot of IT projects, conditions seem to be improving and many projects are back on the radar.

But even then, migrations are long, laborious projects. I'm sure many organizations intend to migrate, it just might not be pressing compared to other IT initiatives. Plus, virtualization has given 32-bit some extra life since you can take a robust server and just carve it up into 4 GB, multi-proc 32-bit Win2k3 servers.

Some organizations may just time their migration with other app migrations or rollouts, such as Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, etc. I think one of the biggest barriers is 3rd-party app support, though. With WS 08 R1, MS started forcing developers to leverage the public APIs. That's definitely a good move in the long run, but this, along with other core OS changes, "broke" a lot of apps. 64-bit just adds another layer of uncertainty, and even if apps will run just fine, some vendors might not officially support it, which can make it a no-go.
