just recenctly had issuses with my xbox live account. i play alot of halo3 and now i cant play at all .i sign in ,look for other players,map pops up to play,map changes ,im booted out ........was on the phone for 3 hours with live support they had no clue whats going on......does anybody!!!!!!

I would build the new OS without regard for backwards compatibility. Microsoft should build the OS they have always wanted with the great new features they never could because it would break lots of existing apps.

Then they should include a virtualized copy of o XP or Vista so people can run any apps that wont run on the new OS. Do this for one or two releases and by then everyone will have migrated their apps to the new OS and we can really move forward.

(This is basically what Apple did with the move to OS X and it worked pretty well.)

Hi Jaxim, thanks for the comment. Honestly the only actual real difference between Home Premium and Ultimate (forget the supposed Ultimate Extras...) is the fact that it has all the home features but it can join a domain.

So, you either have to have a home version that can join a domain or you have a business version that has all the home features. Essentially that was the original idea for creating an 'Ultimate' SKU but then they decided to add these 'ultimate extras' to theoretically make it so they could charge a lot more.

My opinion? Have an Ultimate SKU (or rename it) that has the ability to join a domain with all the home features but make it just slightly more (like maybe $50 more?) than the Home Premium version and forget the failed 'extras.'

I would simplify the # of different home versions of the OS to just one.

Everyone should get Windows 7 Ultimate. There should be no other edition available. Here is another area where I agree with how Apple does it. There's only one version of their OSX.

Vista has caused huge issues in industries that HAVE to use legacy hardware. Oil Company Point of Sale Systems are aways 5-10 years behind the techology curve, for reasons both financial and logistical. Vista home is useless in these types of environments. Vista Business does support some of the needs, but there's lots of tap dancing and smoke and mirror workarounds to be done.

Vista took Intuit (Quicken, Quickbooks, etc.), Sage Software (ACT!, MAS90 accounting, Peachtree Accounting, etc.), AllDATA (Automotive industry repair info provider), Verifone (Point of Sale Systems for C-Stores) by surprise. It seems that there was very little intraindustry communication. Verifone released a Vista compatible interface just a couple months ago, over a year after Vista was released. I don't care what people say, Vista was released prematurely. People lost their jobs trying to prevent the early release of of a faulty product. MS acted like the 800lb gorilla on this one.

I also dispute the statements about the backlash of XP's release. The complaints about XP subsided within a few months. Most of it was about the 'cartoony' appearance of the Home version, and some other function changes. Here we are a year and a half after Vista launch, and there's still active complaints. XP is extremely easy to network, and was more forgiving for 'foreign' networks (like the POS systems I mention above). Vista is over complicated and there's too much of MS's CYA stuff on there that just gets in the way.

Dell and HP stuck to their guns and continued to offer XP Pro for business users. Most corporate network systems I deal with are just NOW moving to XP desktops. Corporate IT infrastructures move to new platforms cautiosly, because having systems up and working 24/7 are their lifeblood.

I switched to a mac 6 months ago because programming was getting too cumbersome on a pc... a few friends who have degrees in CS tell me that they would quit working with computers if Apple ever shut down, and as I gain experience, I really see where they're coming from. There's a lot of junk I just don't want to deal with in an OS, and Macs shield me from having to deal with it. I just need to write and test code, and it's great not to have to deal with compatibility issues-- ever.

One thing that our resident blogger forgot to mention: Macs are extraordinary at keeping their value over time. A used 3-year-old white macbook still goes for $800 used after being purchased for $1200. A 3-year-old Dell with similar features goes for $250 after being purchased for $1200. That's a huge difference. I bought my black macbook, loaded with software (complete Adobe CS3 suite and Office Professional) for $900 and when I upgrade to a MacBook Pro, I'll be able to sell it for at least $1000.

Read the article and understand that the same reasons that MAC users claim Vista stinks, apply across the board to Apple Inc. Leopard shipped without all the claimed improvements. Every version of OS X that I know of suffers through "updates" but if MS updates Vista its because it is buggy. Vista works great if the hardware will support it. I have it on a machine that is over five years old (but with a newer video card) and Aero works great, dreamscapes and all, from a machine you could buy on ebay for under $200. Mac fanboyz are just jealous, now that the Windows interface is coming around we'll see how many artfags will spend the three thousand dollars instead of the $1200 or so for a Vista powered laptop.

We have about 30 G5 machines on our network and they all "require" 8 Gb of RAM to run Leopard and CS2, so any talk of Vista being hardware intensive is a joke. Macs suck and PC's suck, its just that I have more money in my pocket running anything other than MAC. That means something...
