Even before Microsoft has published the first beta of Windows 7 it is working to ensure it will not repeat the same failings of Windows Vista. In a March 21 2008 update to the Microsoft Hardware Logo Program Requirements Microsoft added a new provision for Logo Certification which will require every one requesting Windows Vista logo certification to submit a test logs from Windows 7 as well, once a beta is available.
This new policy, which will become effective June 1, 2008, says there is no requirement that you pass the Windows 7 test to get your Windows Vista Logo Certification, just that you submit it and resolve any issue found before launch of the next OS (Windows 7).
This is a clear indicator that Microsoft is aware of some of the gaps it had with previous client efforts and is working to get well ahead of this in the Windows 7 timeframe.
All of this of course is predicated on what they mean by "beta". Is this an OEM/ISV/IHV only build or is it the build that will get the official "Beta" designation? It certainly wasn't clear to me.
I do not think this means we will see a beta anytime soon, given how evasive Steven Sinofsky was recently with regards to Windows 7 information.
What is clear is that this is a creative way to ensure that vendors are paying attention to Windows 7 and a great way for Microsoft to be much more proactive in dealing with any potential compatibility issues.
As for when we might get our hands on Windows 7...my guess is at the Professional Developer Conference (PDC) in L.A. this October or WinHEC in November. PDC has just started taking registrations so save $200 while you can.
