The Internet Explorer Blog used to be the shining example of how to have open, honest, and direct communication about an upcoming product with a community. It made the world excited about the opportunities that IE7 represented and helped people understand Its features. It also served to give web developers ample lead time to react to the changes it was introducing. What has the blog become since new management took over the helms? Barely a shadow of its former self.
Today , via the blog, the IE team announced that the next version of IE will be called Internet Explorer 8...Wheew, now I can sleep at night, seriously that was bugging me. The worst part is this probably the most meaningful post on this blog in a while.
It is so bad that even Dave Massy, a prominent former member of the team, has wonder what the heck is going on over in Redmond that they aren't have a dialog with the community. His guess now is that we won't see an new browser until 2009 to allow for adequate testing time. Over two years for a new release of the browser, seriously guys?
It is looking likely that Mix is the first time we will hear any real information related to the next generation of browser. So unless they plan on having an actual beta to drop at MIx rather than just some plan for the browser I predict a long road to get to IE8.
