In press release this week Microsoft announced that Media Center was getting "Internet TV". Which is a very ambiguous choice in words. I took it to mean any kind of TV over the Internet, which would include Joost and Livestation types of services and in my book IPTV which are managed services. Robert, who linked to my post, also went down the IPTV route with his speculation. Turns out that was not what was intended by "Internet TV" and here is some clarification on the press release from Microsoft.
The announcement this week regarding Internet TV for Windows Media Center is *NOT* IPTV.
Internet TV is broadband video delivered over any internet connection, such as MSN Video. IPTV is TV and Video over a managed broadband network, usually delivered by a telco company.
The Media Center Team wants to avoid confusion between the Internet TV announcement and IPTV. Internet TV is NOT IPTV for Windows Media Center and should not be seen as a signal that it is coming for Windows Media Center at this time.
What does all this mean? Media Center is still getting "Internet TV", but my speculation that it was Microsoft Mediaroom, or anything IPTV related was incorrect. Sorry Media Center Team, My Bad. I guess "Internet TV" was too much for me to grasp.
