HP has been very quiet on the possibility of a delay to their impending Home Server product MediaSmart, but Microsoft has had no problems talking about it for them. On the Home Server blog they highlight some of the improvements that are planned in this update that is currently targeted at the September monthly Windows Update cycle.
As with most Microsoft products, updates to Windows Home Server will be automatically available throughout the lifecycle of the product and the WHS team is working on an update that will be available in September. These updates will enhance the usability and improve the out-of-the-box experience of home server solutions. Additional updates will occur over the lifespan of the product as we receive feedback from the user community, our hardware partners and software partners. Microsoft’s current plan is to make this update available as part of the monthly Windows Updates process in September.
The word from Microsoft is that HP has decided to wait for these software updates to insure a better out of box experience. The current word is a 75-120 day delay timed to hit the holiday season this year.
UPDATE: Just after posting this this morning I got a note back from the HP Representative I had emailed earlier regading this, Pat Kinley. Bascially they are confirming the above.
HP is committed to providing a robust ease-of-use experience for its HP MediaSmart Server, which is powered by Windows Home Server. As such, the company has decided to create a new software build take advantage of usability enhancements that Microsoft will release in early fall to improve the out-of-the-box experience. HP will incorporate these enhancements and ship the product to U.S. channel partners later this fall, in time for the holidays.
