Seriously, Check out the Skype blog, In a post on the blog Villu Arak explains that the outage which basically decimated the Skype network for two days, preventing people from login in, was because of reboots from Windows Update delivered patches.
The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update.
Microsoft has had a Patch Tuesday every month for years, and no one has ever seen this. How could it all the sudden start affecting Skype users? Don't the same people all run patches every month already? This seems really fishy to me. This one is squarely on Skype for lack of testing and planning. They, I am sure, have to be very familiar with Microsoft monthly updates..this isn't anything new and it hasn't crashed there network before...so this has to have exposed a serious flaw in the system. Blaming Microsoft in this instance is a bunch of crap.
Skype which normally relies on P2P capabilities in its client collapsed under the resource strain. Is this the last time that P2P will collapse because of Patch Tuesday? Are other companies that rely on P2P technology taking notice of this and designing in safeguards? Joost,Livestation, etc. As these system reach a certain user level it is possible they too could collapse under resource strain of a global reboot because of Patch Tuesday? Timezones make this never really simaltanious, but PC's left unattended will reboot and not come back online to join the P2P network which could cause issues.
