Livestation Beta = Possible Joost Killer?

Livestation, I had never heard of this product before today but after an email from a friend about it and a little digging I signed up for the beta and got to play with it for a few hours this morning.

Seems the annoucement for it came out at NAB and most of the recent coverage took place while I was in the middle of my move.

Livestation is a cross between joost and a slingbox.  It combines the ability to deliver live TV over the internet with P2P technology and an impressive, elegant Silverlight client. Is this a glimpse at the future of TV, even if it is only one channel now (BBC 24 Hour news)?

This product is a joint effort between UK based Skinker and Microsoft. It will be going to a public beta very soon so sign up for the beta.

For more information on Livestation check out Steve Clayton's recent interview with Skinker, and the live demo.

Joost certainly has a head start in delivering content over the web, but as a Video On Demand service it won't be able to provide real time feeds such as news and stock info, so you almost need to have a bit of both available in a service and these guys are tackling the harder of the two in my opinion first.

What is the furture of this, I honestly don't know.  Having just taken the dive into HD my first question is when will it have HD content? will it be able to handle the load that HD content might require.  When will we see more channels?  What partnerships are in the works? Even with all the unknown it is pretty cool, go sign up.
