Welcome to another issue of the Weekly Roundup where I try to recap the highlights from the week.
There was noticeably more productivity around the IT world this week as the Halo3 beta concluded. From everyone I have talk to who has played it this game will keep the Halo brand running strong for some time. If you are interested in learning more check out the Halo3 site. Halo3 will ship on Sept. 25th of this year and be available for the Xbox 360 only.
Windows Home Server team shipped a Release Candidate this week and I am starting to get really excited by this product. This is one that seems to not be finding a big audience outside of IT pro's, but over time I think this has huge potential to become the digital gateway to your home if Microsoft sticks with it and of course we support it by purchasing it. The new web site wegotserved.co.uk has been having excellent home server coverage.
Apple made Safari available on the Windows platform. It was pretty much crap according to most people that I talked to and it had exploits found as soon as it came out. After hitting one million downloads in 48 hours they were quick to issue a new version. Welcome to a real user base :P
I think Apple should stick to other things, I have a feeling over time this browser will become more of a problem than a help to the community due to Apples proclivity to integrating exclusively to its own services. yeah yeah, pot, kettle...I know. Seriously do we need another browser? Will Apple make the playing field level? Think so, check out these pictures, very telling.
Oh and that Apple WWDC thing this week that generated millions of page views and was basically a non-event. I still want a wide screen iPod, anyone? The leopard features were eerily similar to many of those already found in Windows Vista. Mary Jo caught the fury of the Apple fan boys for point this out. Man they are a vocal bunch and can get a little nasty. Good thing she has thick skin.
Which makes me wonder how can Windows get that kind of brand loyalty? isn't that the question Microsoft should be asking itself? I know Ray Ozzie, Bob Muglia, and Craig Mundie aren't going get it done. Who has that kind of following that you could put out as a front man? Maybe Mark Russinovich if he ever gets tired of doing real work. He sure commands an audience at TechEd....Thoughts?
I started a bit of a stir myself with my post asking what was up with the Ultimate Extras. I was just wondering out loud what I guess many had already begun to ask themselves. Over 40 commenter on the post, WOW, check it out. Hopefully I will have more information to share before too long in this regard as I continue to dig up information. I am making some headway, so keep tuned.
Patch Tuesday came and ushered in 6 new security updates 4 of which were critical's. If you haven't yet be sure to update your machine.
On a personal note I will be relocating from the Bay Area to Houston next week so expect light posting from me..hopefully some of the other guys can fill in while I am in transition. I hoping to lean on Dwight Silverman to ease me into Houston IT scene.
Have a great weekend everyone!
