You backed up all your files from your Windows XP PC using the built in NTBackup utility and stored it on a USB drive or secondary hard drive then installed Windows Vista. After installing Windows Vista you get ready to restore your files go hunting for the backup utilty only to find the built in one doesn't support your file type and that NTBackup is no longer part of the operating system. So what do you do?
You download the Windows NT Backup restore utility for Windows Vista (or longhorn server) from this here and follow these instructions.
Instructions:
Before you install and run Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility, you need to turn on or install the Removable Storage Management feature.
Note: An NTSMAPI.dll error may occur if Removable Storage Management is not turned on or installed.
To turn on Removable Storage Management in Windows Vista:
1. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Turn Windows Features on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Select the check box next to Removable Storage Management to turn the feature on, and then click OK.
To install Removable Storage Management on Windows Server Codename "Longhorn":
1. Click Control Panel and then click Administrative Tools.
2. Open Server Manager, navigate to the Features Summary section, and click Add features.
3. Select the check box next to Removable Storage Manager, click Next, and then click Install.
A new program group called Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility will be created under the Start menu, and the utility is located in that group.
