Yahoo One Ups Windows Live Messenger

One of my "WOW" moments from the last couple of days was seeing what an upcoming version of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista is going to look like. It has been built from the ground up on Windows Presentation foundation to have the best possible experience on Windows Vista. Hopefully the Windows Live Messenger is paying attention because the new Yahoo! client kicks butt and makes the Windows Live Messenger client look weak in comparison.

The new client will feature an optional tabbed chat experience.  Where you can dock several chat conversations together rather than having a bunch of them sitting all over the screen. This experience is much like tabs in IE or firefox and you can drag and drop them around.

It will come with an integrated sidebar gadget that will allow you to see the status of selected contacts.

Changing the look and feel can be done without ever leaving the main UI.

There are some very cool new engaging emoticons with great looking animations brought to you by the use of WPF. In addition the are making some very cool value add additions like the photo sharing and fantasy football integration seen below.

This app is just way cool.  Great Job Yahoo!

Dude, WOW is right!  And from yahoo??? I'm a bit surprised, but quite pleased!  I've been pressing this 'WPF' bandwagon since early in the beta!  I just wish sharepoint had some beautiful WPF in it.

Yeah,  I signed up for more info at the site.  I will be getting it when it comes out.  You can even chat with MSN contacts....so might be worth a switch...

OMG, that is sooooo nice, one million times better than WLM looks, they really need to update all WL desktop applications for vista.

A switch from MSFT products Josh, shocking

This rocks.  I've always liked YM better than WLM/MSN Messenger anyhow, but this just looks amazing (I'm wondering where the advertising is going to go, though...).

I wrote on Channel 9 a long time ago that Microsoft had better get some WPF apps out there at launch--partly to set the standard and show what can be done, partly to show off the power of Vista, and partly to give us something that actually uses the new technologies in Vista.  Kudos to Yahoo for getting us off to a good start.  Shame on Microsoft for not having more apps ready to go on Vista--and actually take advantage of WPF.  This should be WLM.
