CES - Windows Ultimate Extras Unveiled

One the the session that we had during our Windows Vista lab, which was under NDA until after the keynote, was about Windows Vista's Ultimate Extras.  These are going to be program that are designed to add additional value to the Windows Vista Ultimate SKU.  Here is a list of some of the Extra's that Microsoft is planning to have available around Windows Vista Launch.

Windows Hold 'em

A version of the very popular card game Texas hold 'em. This extra will not be for the hard core Texas Hold 'em fan. It is designed to provide a casual game experience, which means you won't be playing against your friends online and my understanding is the AI is pretty basic.

Multi-user Interface Language Packs

All 35 language packs will be available to Windows Vista Ultimate users. A plus for multilingual families.

Online Secure Key Storage

Microsoft will provide a repository that will safely and securely store your Bitlocker and EFS recovery keys. This service removes the worry of losing keys and external keys. If you plan on using Bitlocker or EFS in a non-domain enviornment this is reason enough to get Windows Ultimate.

Windows BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool

Configures your hard drive so that you can use the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature of Windows Vista.

Windows DreamScene

DreamScene provides users the ability to have videos act as their Windows background.  A very cool feature seen at tonight's keynote in the form of waterfall.  This has been called a number of different names...originally Motion Desktop, then some Beta Testers were told it was Borealis.

  • Windows DreamScene supports only .mpeg and .wmv video file formats.
  • Windows DreamScene video support requires a graphics card that supports Windows Aero™.
  • This is just a taste of some of the Ultimate Extras that will be provided and you can learn about these at the www.windowsultimate.com website.
