Installing the Windows 2003 Administrator Tools on Windows Vista RTM

Some of you might have noticed that after installing the Windows 2003 Administrator pack on Windows Vista RTM some of the tools won't work correctly.  The reason is that though Microsoft added a shim to make the install proceed without needing to modify the MSI anymore the install fails to register several DLL's (adprop.dll and dsadmin.dll) to correct this do the following:

1. Close any of the snap-ins you tried to use.

2. Copy all text between [start copy here] and [end copy here] and save as FIXADMINPACK.CMD

3. Run the script with elevated credentials to register all ADMINPACK DLLs. No restart required.

4. Restart the previously failing ADMINPACK snap-ins and they should behave normally.

Do you know how to make the Exchange System Manager install on Vista?  I would like to install it so I can have the Exchange tabs in ADUC.

Thanks.

I am not an exchange admin, but if you point me to the DL I will give it a go

I have not seen a download for the ESM.  I have only seen it installed from the Exchange CD.  You have to choose install server tools only.

Tyler - I just tried this on my Vista RTM partition and couldn't get ESM to install.  Kept saying the IIS prereq wasn't met... even though I installed EVERYTHING in the IIS tree (including the IIS 6.0 backwards-compatible stuff).  I'll ping the product team and see if there is a known or planned work-around.

That was as far as I got with the install as well.  Kind of a pain as everytime I want to do some admin work for exchange I have to remote in to a server.

Thanks.

Tyler - per an unofficial source at MS we're out of luck at this time.  And no, I don't have an ETA on a work-around/fix :(  TermServ or Virtualization are your only options if you've adopted Vista as your primary desktop OS.

Thanks for checking on this for me.  I was hoping that they would fix it.  Next year I am upgrading to exchange 2007.  Do you know if the Exchange Configuration Manger will work on Vista?

Josh, replied to the MS Newsgroups, but wanted to let you know here as well, that unfortunately the script didn't work. Ran it as local (and domain) admin, but no go. Any thoughts?

Daniel,

What are you getting?  This has worked for most people.

Hi Josh,

The script runs fine, registers all DLLs without hitch. The DHCP tool for example, still only gives me access to the "Server Options", the scope isn't displayed.

I have the same problem as Daniel - I can't see DHCP tree scopes.

Same issue here with the DHCP snap-in.  Just to test I tried to create a dummy scope to see if it would propagate to the server and I received the error "The stub received bad data."  Hopefully someone has an answer.

Hi again. Reinstalled Vista last night, this morning re-installed the Admin Pack, re-run the script, still the same scenario unfortunately.

k,

I am trying to get this to repro...so hang in there.

Sorry for the delay.  With some help from jeff....this just seems to stem from the fact that these aren't supported on Windows Vista.  Most of the stuff does work though after registering the DLL's.  If I find any more info i will let you know.

Thanks for your time Josh. Guess I'll have to wait till vista-compatible versions are released by MS :)

Thanks for the input.  For the time being I will just continue to remote into the server to manage DHCP or I might just create an XP VM for it.

Thanks again.

I have managed to get Exchange Tabs in the ADUC under Vista RTM, but as with everyone else... no luck with ESM. To get the Exchange Tabs follow the normal instructions installing Admin Pak. Then follow Jim McBee's instructions of copying the following files from your exchange server to \windows\system32 on your vista install (you'll need to do this from elevated CMD):

address.dll

escprint.dll

exchmem.dll

glblname.dll

maildsmx.dll

pttrace.dll

Next copy the following three files from \windows\system32\ of a running install of Windows 2003 (maybe XP as well, haven't checked):

netui0.dll

netui1.dll

netui2.dll

Finally:

regsvr32 \windows\system32\maildsmx.dll

It should succeed with no errors. This has not been extensively tested - but it seems to be working.

I tried the above Exchange regsvr32 commands after first copying the files over.. I cant get them to register.. it comes back with an error message: "The module "maildsmx.dll" failed to load. etc

I am running x64 Vista... I did get the administrative tools to work (at first I didnt but eventually they did work).

Thanks...
