Windows Vista Tip: Why I love the TAB key

The tab key is the greatest thing since sliced bread when it comes to navigating around Windows via a command prompt.  You can use it auto-complete paths, file names, and even in the middle of command lines. If you have never used it here is a little more about it.

 If you type the beginning of a path hitting TAB will auto complete the first match that it finds to that string.  For example if I have a “utility” folder at the root of my drive and I do CD U then hit tab it will not auto complete with the utility folder but instead would fill in the first U named folder it finds which would probably be Users.  However if I put in UT then hit tab it will auto complete the rest for me, assuming I don’t have any other folders that begin with UT.  The same trick can be used in typing file names that you want to run.  This can be really useful for long folder paths especially those with spaces as it also automatically puts quotes around it for you. Lets take a look.

Now see what happens when you hit the tab key.

 It completes the path and even puts quotes around it for you.  How great is that!

Enjoy, and try the tab key you will be suprised how many places it will do work for you.

You can do the same on WinXP, by default the tab only autocomplete filename.

You can install TweakUI to make the tab (in fact any key) to autocomplete the directory as well.

Tab autocomplete worked with both files and directories in XP by default. If you wanted the same functionality in 2000 you ran the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; This gives tab style autocomplete for Windows 2000 (not necessary in XP)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor]

"CompletionChar"=dword:00000009

Has you all "should" know this is not a new feature neither on Vista n'or operative systems Linux and unix core systems are doing this for years now not to mention on apple that has this since it is a unix variant also has the so called new features that Vista presents already build on the core like the new called bitlocker apple does this at least 5 years, so microsoft still doesnt bring nothing new to Operating Systems world,

if you have memory pay attention the days to come, with the release of Leopard the new MacOS check the new features and you will see them in the vista 2.0
