Windows Vista Tip – Customizing the “Send To” Menu

Continuing with the Windows Vista Tips here is another quick one. The “Send To” menu is displayed when you right click on a file of folder.  As an IT person, but I am sure anyone might do this, I often find that I want to look at a file in notepad that is associated with something else.  For example a batch file, an html, or an XML these are typically associated with something else, but I want to view it in notepad to troubleshoot or edit them.  To make it easy to open these quickly I add notepad to my “Send To” menu.  To add an application to the “Send To” menu create a shortcut for the app that you want to add at the following location: C:\Users\[LogonId]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

 Adding notepad.

The finished result should look something like this.  This list is sorted alphabetically so you can get creative with your order if you need too by changing the name.

Another right-click related tip is that additional menu options are available when you hold the right shift key while performing a right click on a file or folder.  Menus perviously unavailable such as “Copy a path” when right clicking a file and “Open a command window here” when right clicking on a folder.
