Glimpse of new non-glass theme coming to Windows Vista?

Over at the Hive.net Brandon points out what could be the a new look coming for the non-glass capable Windows Vista machines. The original screenshot which was posted to Matt Goyer here  has been changed to take off the border....hmmm

The theme looks to have a bit of a blue fade to it, were not sure if this will be the new look or not.

What are your thoughts?

Update: This has been confirmed via the Windows Vista technet blog here.

Update: Utakz has some additional insight at his blog here.

My computer does not support the new glass interface, and the alternative is as ugly as hell, why simply don’t have the Tablet PC 2005 theme there too, I am happy with it, and I don’t want to change, let all the effects be there, but I still want my existing style, the blue there I am used too.

I agree, and many others aren't happy with the "scrap metal" look either.  Hopefully they will continue to refine the themes until they reach a happy medium for all...we will have to wait and see....

I actually like the scrap metal. After 5 years I've grown tired of the XP look, luckly we had Royale for the past 2 years, but really Scrap Metal is a nice alternative to the Aero glass if you aren't able to use it.

I think the energy blue has been my favorite...but it would nice it would greater control to people on the themes.

who really gives a crap...extra megs of crap to an already bloated OS...this is stuff third parties or MS could do as a pay for extra...but that's my opinion...i think MS should worry about making Vista safe instead of how "pretty" it may look...

It doesn't look much different. I don't see a compleeing reason to upgrade from XP. All the best features have been pulled and the new Security won't be that much improved on old hardware. Without a newer Processor, Video Card, and more RAM Vista has nothing to offer the existing install base.

Those who buy a new PC will no doubt get pushed into a better hardware platform that can benifit from Vista. It looks like more Glitz and polish than an OS with real benifit unless you are signing into an AD Domain.

In short, I still don't see what Vista has to offer the Home User or Small Business running a Peer to Peer Network. Maybe M$ is no longer interested in this end of the Market. Small and Individual Users were always an after thought anyway.

Gary,

I have over time come reluctantly come to a somewhat similar stance.  Currently my thoughts are if you are getting new hardware after vista launches or anytime between now and then make sure you get Vista ready hardware for when it is available.  (TPM 1.2, 1 to 2 gig of mem, Large HD, etc)

If you have no plans for new hardware, I don't see a compelling reason to make home users switch to Windows Vista.  I would recommend riding out Windows XP until you need to update your hardware and then take both together...

Well having had an Aero type theme on my XP computers for quite a long time using Windows Blinds, I was very disappointed that with Vista I could only get the basic theme, which isn't too bad, most of the promised Vista enhancements are therefore not available like cascading windows turned sideways. To me and end user, it looks like another means by Microsoft to get more money out of us, with yet another OS that only works on High Spec machines which most of us can ill afford.

I wish Apple would introduce an OS for normal PCs, then perhaps we might get something decent for a change.

Robert,

Just get any Mac that can run OS X. You can then use a feature that allows you to run XP ON YOUR MAC! Now install whatever Programs you would use on any other PC. XP works the same as you are used to!

Wish Granted!! The Mac in question will ALREADY be using an Intel Processor and a standard IDE Hard Drive.

Josh;

I think there are more people out there thinking this than M$ hopes we will believe. The people at Apple and Open Source seem to be aware of it too.

What we REALLY need is system stability from our OS.  I'm not sure that Vista offers us that, at least the Beta's don't.
