Windows Defender (Beta 2) for Windows XP Screenshots

Microsoft has just released Windows Defender Beta 2 for Windows XP.  This product was orginally available as Windows Antispyware.

Specific features of Windows Defender Beta 2 include:

  • A redesigned and simplified user interface – Incorporating feedback from our customers, the Windows Defender UI has been redesigned to make common tasks easier to accomplish with a warning system that adapts alert levels according to the severity of a threat so that it is less intrusive overall, but still ensures the user does not miss the most urgent alerts.

  • Improved detection and removal – Based on a new engine, Windows Defender is able to detect and remove more threats posed by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Real Time Protection has also been enhanced to better monitor key points in the operating system for changes.

  • Protection for all users – Windows Defender can be run by all users on a computer with or without administrative privileges. This ensures that all users on a computer are protected by Windows Defender.

  • Support for 64-bit platforms, accessibility and localization - Windows Defender Beta 2 also adds support for accessibility and 64-bit platforms. Microsoft also plans to release German and Japanese localized versions of Windows Defender Beta 2 soon after the availability of the English versions. Use WindowsDefenderX64.msi for 64-bit platforms.

Well, It was about time! The detection engine wasn't bad, but I'm glad they revamped it, because it was not effective enough in my own opinion. I'll give it a try and give out my opinion on [Geeks Are Sexy]

The interface hasn't changed that much since the last version...

The UI looks nice, but I'm unable to update due to being behind an HTTP proxy. The old Microsoft antispyware would allow me to authenticate against the proxy, but this new product will not. Any ideas?

Where can I get this for my Mac?

Oh ... wait.....

ckpicker,

When you install ISA server is puts it in a folder on the server. It is probably on the Server CD/DVD too. I did a quick search for it on Microsoft's site for you and didn't see a direct link to give you. I will keep looking. The text in the UI says "Microsoft Firewall Client for ISA Server 2004" if that helps you in your hunt.

Try checking \\your isa server\mspclnt\setup.exe

to install the firewall client.

STOP LINKING TO YOUR STUPID LITTLE BLOG SITES ON DIGG. IT IS NOT NECESSARY WHATSOEVER, AND IT IS A PETTY WAY TO TRY AND GET PEOPLE TO READ ABOUT THE WOES OF YOUR LIFE.

STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP

Actually the value in linking my blog was the photo gallery which Microsoft doesn't provide.

Stupid stupid stupid, forcing me to have to install the MS proxy client on every machine where previous I didn't need it at all. Stupid stupid stupid. I can't believe they too this step back! ARGH This is why I don't use AdAware!

I am not saying it is required, it was just a sugguestion for someone to try as I didn't have the problem they were reporting and I was running the proxy client.

I agree the proxy client ads some unneeded complexity when it comes to desktop support and shouldn't be a requirement for any app. If it is infact a reqirement we should all bug it.

Видимо, после неудачи с Norton Antivirus'ом Microsoft решила, что название программы для борьбы со шпионскими программами - Anti-Spyware навеки запятнано. Поэ

Augh! I hate this new super simplified interface! Where are all the detailed controls I used to have? FearTec's list is the only place I've seen on the net where people are complaining (although I've not looked with great diligence). It seems that I would see lots of negative reviews, but so far, there's very little. Have I missed it? Seems like the net should be seething!

Frank,

I agree...however, most have had it for less than a day...so give them a little time. I am sure people will be very vocal on the cripiling of this product. My hope is that they are reworking this functionality and not stripped it down to offer a pay for version.

maybe we should arrange a chat with this team.

"Where can i get this for my MAC"

Dunno, ask the other MAC users in your weekly cult. I swear MAC people are secretly in love with their computers.

I'll take Linux over a icrap anyday.

I don't like the fact that you HAVE to have SP2 installed to use this software. I prefer not to have SP2 on my system, and that was just fine with microsoft anti spyware. Why am I now forced to use it? Makes me wonder what SP2 is doing in it's spare time :^p

MikeC,

Are you serious? you really should be using SP2...

Defender downloads, installs and runs. However, the related latest update, KB892519 will download (I think) but will not install, ewven on a windows shutdown path.

Dude, you running WinXP without SP2 is like going to Taiwan and playing in the house of sluts without protection.

It's people with machines like yours that keeps the joy of low level malware / virii flowing nice and steady.

If you are going to use XP, at least protect yourself....
