RSAT Available - Also Hyper-V Management

Want to administer your Windows Server 2008 servers (including Server Core and Hyper-V) without using Terminal Services? Microsoft just released the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows Vista SP1. The links may or may not work for you... but here you go:

For anyone testing Hyper-V there is a separate download for that role (probably separate since Hyper-V isn't finalized):

Keep in mind these downloads require Vista SP1 in an Active Directory domain environment. If you have trouble with the links just hit www.microsoft.com/downloads - search for RSAT or Hyper-V and sort by date. They should be at the top of the list. Enjoy!

If by 'work with' you mean does it administer Win2003 servers... the answer is no. You'd still need to use the goodies inside Adminpak.msi to manage your 2000/2003 boxes. Think of RSAT like having a local copy of Server Manager (all the roles/features, etc.). That model doesn't map back to 2000/2003 in most cases - thus the need for two separate tool packs. Kind of a pain, but such is life. Cheers! --Jeff

Dear "A regular Visitor":

Thanks for being a loyal reader. Rest assured we're still here! Not sure about Josh/Aubrey/Matt... but my day job has been more like a day/evening job lately. Keep us in your RSS feed and hopefully you'll be able to speak of us being 'one of your favorite' in the present tense vs. the past tense ;)

Thanks again --Jeff

Hey Jeff,

I have had some time to look at some new Hyper-V management WMI providers and I have to say MS is doing some seriously nice work. Its all there and easy for a ISV to build on. The exact opposite is the VMWare VIX API which, as an ISV, is a deployment nightmare. I mean, come on, I have to install the VIX SDK on a VMWare Server just to use the COM API. That API should be there right out of the box. I guess the fact that VMWare has 3 or more API for the same products should have been a give away that things were not going to be smooth. In contrast, the API for the current version of MS Virtual Server were trivial to implement to and the new Hyper-V is taking that to the next level.
