Important WSUS Updates

Today Microsoft released three important WSUS updates you should be aware of.  See this post on the official WSUS blog for details.  Here's some additional info and clarification:

  • Over the last few months some users have experienced issues when running detections against WSUS or the Microsoft-hosted update services (WU/MU). These issues are documented in KB927891 if you're interested in the details.  One of the updates released today is a new 'Self Update Tree' for WSUS 2.0 that will auto-update your WSUS clients to the newest Automatic Updates client. This is the same Automatic Updates client that ships with WSUS 3.0 (build 374).  Consider this Part 1 of a two part fix. And no, this update won't cause your clients to stop talking to WSUS 2.0. The Automatic Updates client is backward-compatible.
  • The second update released today is the MSI patch referenced in KB927891. You should see this update the next time you sync WSUS.  This is Part 2 of the fix for issues documented in KB927891.  Bottom line - get both of these updates if you have slowness/lock-ups when running detections.
  • The third update released today is actually WSUS 3.0 itself.  You can approve this update to upgrade your WSUS 2.0 servers (and WSUS 3.0 RC) to WSUS 3.0 RTM. However, keep in mind that you still need to install MMC 3.0 and the Report Viewer to get the full product experience. The WSUS 3.0 upgrade will proceed fine without them... but you might be disappointed when you can't open the very attractive new GUI ;)

So... three new updates available via WSUS. They are all important for different reasons. My guess is that most WSUS administrators will opt to upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 the old-fashioned way. But hey - at least you have options.
