Don't Steal From Steve Jobs

Remember when the iPhone came out? And all those happy Apple employees that got free iPhones? And remember when Apple lowered the price of the iPhone, and offered rebates to all those people who had already purchased an iPhone at the higher price?

Well, apparently some Apple employees decided to cash in on the $100 rebate, even though they didn't pay a dime for the phone in the first place. About 800 of them, to be more specific. Did I say Apple employees? I meant former Apple employees. According to reports, those 800 people are out of a job now.

I wonder if they got to keep their iPhones?

Apparently the original story was false.  It appears that to receive the rebate it is necessary to provide both the device serial number and the telephone number.  Employees' units would be ineligible and would be denied.

Well, Ars Technica's story says:

"Apple has attempted to respond to our request for comment, but did not comment on the story. "

Plus this from a commenter there:

"Someone I know gave their phone as a gift to a family member, who redeemed the credit, and he got a talking to from the store manager, but no iSlip."

So nothing official that I have seen yet saying it's false, and no retraction from Ars Technica yet, either.
